Privacy Policy
This policy explains how SA Energy handles personal information when you use this website. It is written to meet the requirements of the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).
Who we are
SA Energy is the responsible party for the personal information described here.
- Registered name: [TO CONFIRM: registered entity name]
- Registration number: [TO CONFIRM]
- Physical address: [TO CONFIRM]
- Information Officer: [TO CONFIRM: name] — editor@example.com
What we collect, and why
We collect very little. There are no accounts on this site and nothing to sign up for.
When you use the contact form
We collect the name, email address, subject and message you type in. We use them only to read and reply to your message. The message is emailed to our editor and is not added to a mailing list or shared with anyone else. Our lawful basis is that processing is necessary to respond to a request you have made.
The form is protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks that a submission comes from a person rather than a bot. To do that, Cloudflare processes technical signals from your browser and your IP address. This check is necessary for the form to work and runs only on the contact page.
Analytics, and your choice about cookies
We would like to understand which articles are read so that we can publish more of what is useful. To do that we use Google Analytics 4, which sets cookies in your browser.
Nothing loads until you accept. When you first visit, a banner asks whether you consent. If you decline, or simply ignore the banner, no analytics script is loaded and no analytics cookie is set. Your choice is remembered in your browser's local storage — not in a cookie — and you can change it at any time using the Cookie preferences link in the footer.
Where analytics is enabled, IP addresses are anonymised and Google advertising signals are switched off. We do not use advertising, remarketing or social media tracking pixels anywhere on this site.
Server logs
Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, keeps standard technical logs (for example IP address, browser type and the page requested) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. These are held by Cloudflare under its own terms and retention periods.
Who we share information with
We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for marketing. Information is processed on our behalf by:
- Cloudflare — website hosting, security, the contact form's spam check, and delivery of the contact email.
- Google — analytics, and only where you have accepted analytics cookies.
- [TO CONFIRM: email provider] — the mailbox where contact messages are received and stored.
Sending information outside South Africa
These providers operate globally, so your information may be processed on servers outside South Africa. POPIA permits this where the recipient is subject to a law or binding agreement that provides an adequate level of protection. Our providers offer contractual data protection terms for this purpose.
How long we keep it
- Contact form messages: kept in the editor's mailbox for as long as needed to deal with the enquiry, and reviewed at least annually.
- Analytics data: retained according to the setting in our Google Analytics property [TO CONFIRM: retention period, recommended 14 months].
- Server logs: retained by Cloudflare under its own policy.
Your rights under POPIA
You have the right to:
- ask what personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct or delete information that is inaccurate, irrelevant or excessive;
- object to processing, on reasonable grounds;
- withdraw consent for analytics at any time, using the footer link;
- complain to the Information Regulator.
To exercise any of these, email editor@example.com. We may need to confirm your identity before we act, and we will respond within a reasonable time.
Complaints to the Regulator
If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your information, you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa): inforegulator.org.za, or by email to POPIAComplaints@inforegulator.org.za.
Children
This is a trade news site intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 18. If you believe a child has sent us information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS. The contact form is protected against automated abuse, and access to the systems that publish this site is restricted to named accounts. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, so please do not send confidential material through the contact form — arrange a secure channel with us first.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page if our practices change, and the date at the top will change with it.
